Best Dog Foods For Acid Reflux : Dry and Canned

Does your puppy and/or dog suffer with acid reflux issues? Mine do!

I control the issue through proper nutrition and the use of holistic methods, especially the use of acid-free dog foods. Recommendations for these foods and how to time feedings appear in this article.

Types of foods are also stressed and most recommendations are based on the ingredients shown on the label.

Best Dog Foods For Acid Reflux

In this article, we’re going to review the following Acid Reflux dog foods:

How A Dog Or Puppy’s Acid Reflux is Related To Food

This disease can be very prevalent in puppies as their esophageal sphincter can be undeveloped.

I’m always researching the breed, and was aware of the sensitive stomachs that “Greys” can have, with Acid Reflux Disease being one of the chronic problems.

All of our dogs’ stomachs gurgle whenever they eat and they can gag and sometimes even vomit.

Callie also coughs, has some mouth odor and salivation, along with noisy breathing and actual separation anxiety.

These are all symptoms of Acid Reflux Disease but can also be symptoms of other more serious diseases and our vet and I are working together to control this problem.

If your dog or dogs also have these symptoms it is wise for you to take your “baby” to your vet and confirm the diagnosis and rule out more serious problems.

You can choose then to control the disease, as I am, with acid-free foods and diet restrictions and feeding changes if you wish.

There are medication alternatives too, but I am more prone to choosing a holistic approach to medical issues.

Solutions for Ongoing Management of Acid Reflux Disease and Choices of Acid-Free Foods VS Medications

I now know that this is a manageable disease and can even respond to simple over-the-counter medications such as Pepcid and/or TUMS.

However, dosage needs to be controlled when using Pepcid and the medication works best when given on an empty stomach.

Pepcid can also be prescribed drug called Famotidine but my vet feels my dogs will do well on just an over-the-counter variety if I ever choose to use medication to control their condition.

The vet and I also agree, however, that this condition is controllable with dietary restrictions.

The use of acid-free foods and methods of feeding to control this disease have been successful for Baxter and Colin, and I’m sure Callie is already benefiting from this approach as well.

Some foods are more acid-free than others, and there are methods of feeding that I am using.

My babies hate taking pills, and I also always prefer natural methods of control for chronic medical problems.

With that said, however, a TUMS, which is simple Calcium Carbonate is sometimes suggested by a veterinarian to immediately ease symptoms.

Learning About The Management Of This Disease Through Trial And Error

My experience with this disease and the fact that I own three dogs of the same breed but different ages, and nutritional needs, does make me remain flexible when treating this disease naturally.

I sometimes still do not prevent the acid reflux entirely, and the food and feedings and foods are then adjusted.

My precious dogs also have varying nutritional needs depending on their exercise requirements and their general overall health on any given day.

I don’t remain strict in my approach to this.

Since Acid Reflux Disease is prevalent in both dogs and puppies at any age, each of my fur babies need a somewhat different approach to this disease.

A dog’s size and weight is always taken into consideration as well.

An overweight dog is more likely also to develop Acid Reflux Disease.

The disease itself is not deadly but can lead to other problems such as erosion of the esophagus, and even pneumonia.

Young dogs and puppies may very well outgrow the disease while it may get progressively worse in older dogs.

I use a chart to keep track of all feedings and foods!

I also have to watch my babies closely when feeding as they eat each others’ foods when not watched like a hawk!

Staying to a timeframe and types of foods has made my “Greyhound Gang” more cooperative.

This does make it a more calm and relaxed atmosphere, eliminating stress in a dog’s life which also can disrupt digestion.

Stages Of A Dog’s Life And Their Age Does Impact Control Of Acid Reflux Disease

Since Acid Reflux Disease is prevalent in both dogs and puppies at any age, each of my fur babies need a somewhat different approach to this disease.

Baxter, the oldest, is fed about 4 times a day, with specialized food that is geared towards reducing acid reflux, but also lower in calories, as he is slower now in his advancing age, and does no longer need a very high calorie diet.

Colin, my “middle-aged” baby, also has specialized food to prevent acid reflux, but his calorie needs are somewhat higher, so a higher calorie diet is recommended by our vet and used.

Colin is fed approximately 6 times a day with maybe a small snack of raw food.

Colin’s food can be described as your “average” amount of calories and nutrition.

I also feed Callie, the “baby” of the bunch at six months of age, smaller portions of food, several times a day even as many as seven or eight times, which does help control the acid production.

Raw snacks are also included, because of her nutritional and calorie needs as a puppy.

Callie, as a puppy, has a very high caloric need, and many more nutritional needs because of her great energy level and the fact that she is still growing for the next eighteen months.

Callie is fed the most times per day because of her youth, and puppy food as well as “human food” is used.

All the food she is given do meet the requirements for control of Acid Reflux Disease and also her heavy nutritional and caloric requirements.

A dog’s size and weight is always taken into consideration as well when developing a feeding plan to combat this disease, as an overweight dog is more likely also to develop Acid Reflux Disease.

The age of the dog or puppy is crucial in developing a plan for control and since all ages are affected, knowledge on how to control the issue and rule out other more serious problems is also crucial.

The disease itself is not deadly but can lead to other problems such as erosion of the esophagus, and even pneumonia.

Young dogs and puppies may very well outgrow the disease while it may get progressively worse in older dogs, given the fact that the underlying cause is a weak esophageal sphincter.

Puppies’ muscles, including the esophageal sphincter will strengthen over time, whereas in older dogs, it tends to weaken with age.

Planning a Routine Around Feedings is Imperative in Control of Acid Reflux Disease

I use a chart to keep track of all feedings and foods!

I also have to watch my babies closely when feeding as they eat each others’ foods when not watched like a hawk!

Staying to a timeframe and types of foods has made my “Greyhound Gang” more cooperative however, with the feeding schedule and types of foods and you might want to make sure that you plan like I do for the feedings.

This does make it a more calm and relaxed atmosphere, eliminating stress in a dog’s life which also can disrupt digestion.

A General Guideline For Choosing Appropriate Foods For Dogs And Puppies With Acid Reflux

Foods such as chicken and broccoli, which have a higher water content and therefore do not produce as much stomach acid are fed regularly to all my Greyhounds.

Several brands of dog food that are more acid-free than others are also fed.

Reading the labels carefully is paramount when purchasing food.

Dry kibble should be moistened with about a cup of water before feeding, depending on the quantity of food.

This increases digestibility.

I use measurements specifically geared towards each of my dogs age, weight, level of activity and of course, the severity of the Acid-Reflux Disease in each.

The choice of dog food is basically the same week in and week out as changes in diet, as everyone knows, can also upset a dog’s sensitive stomach.

Spicy foods are avoided.

A Possible Good Solution For Control Of Acid Reflux is A Combination Of Methods

  • Choosing high water content foods for feeding such as chicken and broccoli
  • Choosing acid-free dog foods
  • Adding water to dry dog foods
  • Feeding several smaller meals per day
  • Feeding foods that contain Omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon.
  • Feeding foods or giving a dog supplements that contain probiotics
  • Feeding additional foods such as boiled beef, lamb, rice, vegetables, and boiled eggs
  • Adding Coconut oil to a dog’s diet
  • Adding a bit of honey to a dog’s diet
  • Feeding non-GMO dog foods
  • Feeding grain and gluten free dog foods
  • Feeding raw fruits and vegetables if the dog will take these
  • Selecting amounts and types of foods that are nutritionally appropriate for a dog’s life stage
  • Choosing dry and wet dog foods with five ingredients or less
  • Avoiding candy, artificial sweeteners, sugars, and cocoa
  • Possibly considering medication when used under a veterinarian’s care
  • All factors point to the solution of natural ingredients, and a small amount of ingredients when handling this disease.

Tips To Become A Responsible Dog Owner

A Simple Guide And Rule That I Use To Purchase Dog Food That Alleviates Acid-Reflux Disease

Since I do have three loyal companion Greyhounds, one senior male, one middle-aged male, and a six-month old female puppy I’m constantly making lists and doing research on the best dog foods to eliminate or at least alleviate Acid Reflux Disease since all three of my “darlings” are beset with this disease.

I keep in mind their age differences, different nutritional needs, energy levels, and for me, of course, price.

I am sharing the brands I’ve found that I prefer, and you can see for yourself which ones you think would work and which you prefer according to price and effectiveness.

If you like, you could also print out this list and take it to your vet for discussion before purchasing any products.

I personally combine dry dog food, wet dog food, and fresh food for variety for my puppy and dogs, as they all just love variety.

Each has a slightly different “favorite” meat, with Baxter absolutely loving turkey, Colin adoring beef, and my baby girl Callie craving chicken all the time.

This list uses the recommendations previously mentioned, with the least amount of ingredients used in them, and the absence of any stomach irritating additives or fillers.

Read each bag or can carefully before you choose, just as I do, and I’m sure you’ll find something that works for your dog or dogs too!

The best method of determining which foods to buy initially is to check the labels carefully, avoiding all additives and preservatives.

A good rule of thumb is to look for foods with five ingredients or less as a dog’s stomach naturally will digest less ingredients more efficiently.

Even human stomachs perform this way!

Highly Digestible Meats For Control Of Acid-Reflux Disease

Chicken, turkey, beef, especially if boiled, and any lean meat that is water soluble are a great choice for control of Acid-Reflux Disease.

Salmon, although a fish, is soothing to the stomach, and therefore also another good feeding choice, as it also contains Omega-3 properties, which are also essential to a dog or puppy’s health.

It is vitally important to read all labels thoroughly and ensure that the product contains the best meats, and no additives and preservatives for this disease.

It also helps in determining if the ingredients are low enough, as five ingredients only are preferable.

Check the Labels!

All ingredients should be all natural, and the less ingredients in a product, the better!

Although many products exist, any additives can cause symptoms of Acid Reflux, and the less ingredients, the more digestible the food are.

Can Dog Eat Rice?

The Best Guideline To Successful Control is To Remember This Combination Of Foods

  • Wet: Should be low fat. Either high protein or low protein must be adjusted depending on a dog’s age.
  • Dry: Again, low fat, and protein adjustment must be done. Water should be added to make it more digestible.
  • Raw: Low fat, of course, but protein can easily be adjusted here, as can the fat, as foods chosen are of course, your selection. I stick with chicken, turkey and broccoli for the solubility, and some salmon, for the Omega-3 benefits which also help. Salmon is also soothing to the stomach.
  • Protein levels are not as much of a concern as the actual digestibility of the protein. Puppies need higher protein levels of course and higher caloric intakes.

Dog Breeds That Don’t Shed

Some Dogs And Puppies Can Be Sensitive To Grains

Grains can wreak havoc too as some dogs and puppies are very sensitive to these.

It does depend on your own pet as some can digest grains.

Look for signs of indigestion whenever feeding and eliminate foods that cause problems.

Not all dogs and puppies are sensitive to grains, but many are.

Some grains such as brown rice can be better tolerated and actually aid digestion.

Trial and error are needed here, and elimination of problem causing grains must occur.

In the beginning it is best to avoid all grains.

Grains can be introduced slowly and sensitivity checked.

Some puppies and dogs do tolerate grains, especially whole grains such as brown rice.

Artificial Additives And Preservatives Are To Be Avoided At All Costs

Additives are very irritating to a dog or puppy’s stomach and can cause an excess acid flair-up.

Foods chosen should not contain any excess additives.

Preservatives also can cause acid flare-ups and should also be avoided at all costs.

It’s part of a larger line, the Purina One Line and has types of foods for all types of digestive and health issues.

This food is grain free, and additive free.

It also comes in a variety of flavors, but I personally purchase the chicken and duck for my dogs, Baxter and Colin.

Although it’s not a “senior” product for Baxter, but rather fits Colin’s nutritional needs better, it contains only five ingredients and both like the product.

I just feed Baxter slightly less, since he doesn’t need as many calories as Colin.

It’s also a great purchase for me, as there is the option to purchase a whole case, which really brings the cost down to a minimum.

PROS:

  • It comes in turkey and duck, and turkey and salmon also, all of which are good for relieving Acid Reflux Disease.
  • If in doubt as to which variety to buy, you can purchase a variety case, just to see which your dog or dogs would prefer.
