Breed Information

Greyhounds are of the hound breed. This specific breed of dog was bred for hunting and racing.

Many famous People owned greyhounds starting with the Queen of Egypt named Cleopatra, in whose country these dogs were first seen.

Later, Queen Elizabeth, the first acquired one for racing. General Custer of the United States Army, owned 14 greyhounds which he raced before he went to war.

Name

  • Greyhound.

The name, Greyhound, comes from the Old English word ‘grighund’ or ‘greghund’ as grig means dog and hund is the antecedent of the word hound.

This tells us that the Old English language has evolved. They did not speak English as we do today.

Other Names

Some researchers believe that greyhounds go way back to the days of the Celts in Western Europe, namely Gault. The Celts once called them “Greek Hounds” as they thought that they belonged to the Greek.

The word greyhound may be derived from “Greek Hound”. The Egyptians called them Pharaoh Hound and there is a distinct similarity in the pureness and built of those dogs to present-day greyhounds.

Greyhounds are also mentioned in the Bible. In Hebrew, the word “greyhound” translates into the phrase “girt in the loins”; the Saluki used by the Arabs in hunting is also another name for greyhounds of purebred.

Others simply call them hounds or sighthounds but the purer the breed the better the dog is at hunting and running.

History & Area of Origin

Greyhounds were first owned by the royalty of Egypt. If you should visit the tombs, you will notice the statues of greyhounds on the tombs of their royal owners. These dogs were first used in hunting expeditions and later in the sport of racing.

Greyhounds have keen eyesight and were able to see small prey such as the hare and chase them for their masters to collect. No wildlife could outrun the greyhound.

They were able to capture small prey and return to their masters with the prey in their mouth or wait until their master came to the area of the catch.

On the other hand, greyhounds were a sure win if placed in a race with other dogs. General Custer collected the dogs solely for that purpose.

Size

The greyhound is a large dog that has a long, sleek body with a narrow head. Most greyhounds have long tails. To the naked eye, the body looks extremely thin as the breed of dog has no second coat; only one thin coat is on this breed of dog.

Greyhounds stand tall and can be nearer to your hip than your knee. They do not get fat as their favorite activity is running and the metabolism uses food for energy instead of fat.

Height

Greyhounds are very tall dogs. From the floor to the shoulder, a greyhound bred for racing can stand 25 to 29 inches tall.

However, a greyhound bred for show stands 26 to 30 inches from the floor to the shoulder. Some greyhounds will stand at your waist if you are not a very tall person.

Male: 27–30inches (68.58–76.2 cm)

The male greyhound is taller than a small child. It is approximately 27-30 inches (68.58-76.2 cm) from the floor to the shoulder.

This dog has a regal look when standing in one place.

Female: 25–28 inches (63.5–71.12 cm)

The female greyhound is not much shorter than the male. It is approximately 25-28 inches (63.5-71.12 cm) from the floor to the shoulder.

She is also a tall dog that you would be proud to have as a companion.

Puppies: 6–14 inches (15.24-35.56 cm)

Greyhound puppies range from 6-12 inches (15.24-35.56 cm) or even taller depending on the age of the puppy. These puppies grow fast to resemble their parents.

At birth, they have the usual puppy size but change as they grow older to the sleek look of greyhounds with pure muscles.

Length (Nose to tail)

Greyhounds are a breed of dogs with an exceptionally long length from nose to tail.

If you stop at the rump of a greyhound, it will seem long but if you add the length of its tail that will surely be quite a measurement.

Male: 34–36 inches (86.36–91.44 cm)

A male greyhound measures approximately 34-36 inches from nose to rump, without his tail.

If you are able to measure its tail without being snapped at, you will be able to add 8-10 inches more to your greyhound’s length. A male greyhound is quite a long dog.

Female: 33–35 inches (83.82–88.9 cm)

The female greyhound is not much shorter in length than her male counterpart. At some moments, they may have the same length from nose to tail.

A female greyhound can measure from 33-35 inches (83.82-88.9 cm) from nose to rump; add 8 to 10 inches for the tail and your measurement is complete.

Remember to be cautious when measuring a dog’s tail.

Puppies: 12–16 inches (30.48–40.64 cm)

Greyhound puppies have varying lengths as they grow quickly as they feed. They will not remain one length for too long.

Puppies may start at 12-16 inches (30.48-40.64 cm) and grow beyond that length rather quickly until they get to adult length.

Weight

Greyhound dogs do not look too heavy but you would be surprised if you attempted to carry an adult greyhound.

Do not underestimate the weight of a greyhound just because it is a skinny dog. It can knock you off your feet if your actions scare or stress him at any one moment.

From: Belpatt.fr

Male: 65–85 pounds (29.5–38.6 kg)

As in any other breed of dog, the male greyhound is the heavier of its breed. It weighs roughly 65-85 pounds (29.5-38.6 kg).

Some greyhound dogs have been known to weigh 95 pounds (43.1 kg) or more.

From: Belpatt.fr

Female: 50–65 pounds (22.3–29.5 kg)

The female greyhound is also a heavy dog. In her sleek body, there can be 50-65 pounds (22.3-29.5 kg) of pure muscles.

She can also knock you off your feet if you should startle her.

Puppies: 8–20 pounds (3.6–9.1 kg)

The weight of a greyhound puppy depends on its age. They start out at about 8 pounds (3.6 kg) and can go up to 22 pounds (10 kg) by the age of 3 months.

When they are at 6 months they can weigh up to 44 pounds (20 kg) or more.

Purebreds And Mixed Breeds

Most greyhounds are purebred but there are a few that are mixed. The purebreds are noticeable by the S-shaped body, the ears that they like to pin backward when stressed, the long tail, and the head that is shaped like a narrow triangle.

Their coat is never long and they only have one coat. There are a variety of mixed hounds. I presently have a German Shepherd Hound; it is a large dog and has long floppy ears and two coats of hair.

Other mixed hounds are the Plott Hound, the American Foxhound, the Harrier, and the Ibizan Hound. Just to name a few mixed hounds.

Greyhound Dog Behavior and Temperament

Most greyhounds are friendly and like to play with their owners. They show temperament at an early age. Some puppies beat up their siblings while other puppies get along easily with their siblings.

Then there are the puppies who like to stay in a corner away from the others by themselves. It is best to acquire a socialized puppy or dog to prevent the destruction of your furniture or an attack upon your person.

A socialized dog is best for the safety of your children and your immediate family.

Alertness

All greyhound dogs are alert when on a walk or a run. This breed of dogs was specifically for hunting game. Greyhounds hunt whatever they see so they remain alert to whatever wildlife can be chased and captured.

Greyhound canines can also spook prey for their owners to shoot. Your every move and intention is noticeable to your dog but he will move ahead of you if there is a threat to your person.

Friendly

As house dogs, greyhounds are friendly dogs. Be sure to give them attention so that they do not feel that they are outsiders to your family.

Treat them as family members and you will have loving pets. As a pet, greyhounds need space among family members. He needs a place to eat and a place to sleep. In this way, you will have a friendly pet that will welcome your visitors to your home.

Gentle

Greyhounds that have been socialized will be gentle to you and your family members. You need not fear to leave your children to play with your greyhound pet.

Be sure not to stress your pet as this may cause his ears to move very close to his head and his tail will go between his hind legs.

Outgoing

Greyhounds are not as outgoing as other dogs. They do not run to greet you when you return from work but will accept going on a walk for some form of exercise at the end of the day.

Greyhounds are bred for running so there is a need to be met.

Personality

Greyhounds have a good personality and are quite intelligent. Training is the key to coping with the aloof personality of this breed of dog.

If you often have visitors at your home, allow each visitor to give your pet a treat to socialize the dog to new faces and smells.

Taking your greyhound dog to functions and stores that allow your dog to enter as often as possible. In this way, socialization occurs in various environments.

Coat Types

Some greyhounds have double coats. This means that there are a short coat and a long coat that can be trimmed to suit the owner or climate.

Many of the mixed hounds have double coats. However, the purebreds have a single low coat of hair. This single coat does not protect the greyhound when it is very cold or in the snow. These dogs need a coat made by humans to keep them from getting sick.

Special materials are used to maintain a level of warmth in the body greyhounds.

Coat Colors

The greyhounds were mostly grey colored dogs. However, many of the purebreds are brown or splashed with white on the brown. Other greyhounds are black, white and black with a white undercoat. There is also light brown with a white undercoat.

There are also greyhounds that resemble deer with similar patterns on their coats; other greyhounds have a tawny color with patterns on their coats.

Eyes

The eyes of the greyhound dogs are narrow and small. When the dogs are pups their eyes are blue and when they are adults the eyes are brown.

Pups with blue eyes usually have amber-colored eyes when they grow older. Most greyhounds will have dark brown eyes. Blue eyes in adult greyhound are very rare.

Nose

The nose of the greyhound is small and black. The greyhound does not hunt by smell so it does not need a large nose.

The nose is at the tapered end of the greyhound’s head. The bridge of the greyhounds’ nose is very long from the top of their head to the tip of their nose.

Tail

The majority of the greyhounds that I have seen are long-tailed. Most of them have a tail that is of a similar color to the body of the dog. Their tails begin at their rumps and taper off to a thin point that hangs at the back of the dogs.

Most of the dogs have skinny tails to match the lines of their bodies. Greyhounds use their long tails to maintain balance when they are running and turning curves.

Sexual Maturity in Greyhounds

From: Foxnews.com

Male

Male greyhounds mature at the age of 12 months. You will notice him sniffing the female dog.

She may or may not allow him to mate. If you wish to, you can seek a female greyhound who is ready to mate so your litter can be as pure as possible.

Female

Female greyhounds are ready to carry a litter at 12 months. You will notice swollen vulva and bleeding. The first period or Proestrus lasts for about 9 days. The second period or Estrus lasts for about 3 to 11 days.

During this time she will be more receptive to advances from the male. The third part called the Diestrus which has a very bright red discharge and signifies the end of the period.

Litter Size: 1-12 number of Puppies

Eight puppies are the ideal litter for the most female greyhound. Other female greyhounds have had 1 puppy and more. Greyhounds have been known to have a maximum of 12 puppies. So there can be litters anywhere from 1 to 12 puppies in a litter.

Be sure to allow a mother greyhound enough time to feed her litter so that they can grow at their normal pace which is quite fast. It is important to note that the period of gestation lasts 60 to 64 days.

Life Span: 10- 15 Years of Life

The ideal life span of a greyhound dog is 12 years. However, with the right care and regular visits to the vet, your greyhound can live for 15 years.

Be aware that the lifespan of your greyhound pet depends on how you provide the right environment, the right socialization, and the right health care.

You are the deciding factor. Therefore, research what is best for your greyhound and follow the guidelines given to you by your vet.

Care Requirements of Greyhound Dog

Do not ignore your greyhound. Spend time with your pet even if it is to take a run around your backyard. Take your dog to the vet once a month and update his vitamins and worm medications.

Protect his environment from pests like fleas and ticks.

Grooming Requirements

  • Be aware that greyhounds shed. Use a firm brush to brush the coat of your greyhound.
  • Shampoo with the vet recommended shampoo once a week.
  • Dry after shampooing with a towel to avoid sickness.
  • Maintain body temperature by having the right environment for your greyhound.
  • Check your dog’s ears for any abrasions or tear from rough playing with other dogs.
  • Check your dog’s nose for any unusual scars.
  • Clean your dog’s teeth with a toothbrush and a toothpaste suitable for dogs.
  • Always check the pad under the toes of your greyhound for any swelling.
  • Check between the toes of your greyhound for any sand or soft soil.
  • Clip the nails of your greyhound once a month to protect your skin and furniture.

Exercise Requirements

  • Are you free for the next hour?
  • That is how much exercise time your greyhound needs in exercise time a day.
  • It is true that a 20 minute run through your house will suffice on a few days when you are pooped out after work.
  • Your greyhound needs to release conserved energy every day.
  • One choice is to take your greyhound to your backyard and let him off the leash for an hour.
  • However, daily walks outside of your yard in a park or on a walkway are perfect for you and your greyhound.
  • These walks build a bond of trust between you and your pet.
  • These walks are also mental and physical stimulation for your dog.
  • If your greyhound is a strong, young dog, a one-mile run is good for him.
  • If you have an aged greyhound, a short, slow walk without interaction with other dogs is best suitable for your dog.
  • Always carry a bottle of water along for your dog in case he gets overheated.
  • It is not wise to walk your greyhound in the heat of the day as it may cause your dog to have a heat stroke.

Walking is best done with your greyhound in the early morning or late in the evenings to prevent heat strokes.

Health Requirements

  • Pannus is an eye disorder of the greyhound that can cause blindness if not treated; it covers the cornea of your greyhound’s eyes.

  • Corns can develop on the pads of your greyhound’s feet and cause him to limp; take your dog to the vet as it may need to be surgically removed depending on its size.

  • Bone cancer (Osteosarcoma) is the most common type of cancer found in dogs. It eats away at good bones of the front legs at the wrist and shoulder leaving behind damaged and weakened bones. Most race dogs and brood bitches are affected by this cancer. Constant visits to your vet will help your dog to live comfortably with this form of cancer. Amputation in most cases extends the life of your greyhound to six months or less.

  • Fleas are transmitted by other dogs, cats, or bedding containing straw. At some time during the year, your dog will become affected by fleas. It is important to clean the environment and ask your vet for the best shampoo to remove fleas from your greyhound. He will also recommend powders to spread in the environment to prevent their return to your dog’s bed.

Training Requirements

  • Part 1-House Training Your Greyhound
  • Choose a good name for your dog.
  • Decide on what you will allow your greyhound to do and what you will not allow him to do in your home.
  • Decide on where his space will be and do so in proportion to the size of the dog.
  • Buy a 6 feet (1.8 m) nylon leash and a martingale collar. Place 2 fingers under your dog’s collar to prevent choking while walking.
  • Use a crate to house train your Greyhound.
  • Do not use the crate as punishment.
  • Part 2-Creating a walking schedule
  • Establish a set routine- 90 minutes after a meal.
  • Take your Greyhound out first thing in the morning.
  • Go for another 10 to 15-minute walk.

  • Go for a longer, recreational walk
  • Finish the day with one more 10 to 15-minute walk

  • Start with the “wait” command.
  • Practice basic commands like “sit”.
  • Praise your Greyhound verbally and with a treat.
  • Enroll your Greyhound in an obedience course.
  • End your training session with words of praise.

Greyhound Dog Breed Info Characteristics Facts

Physical Characteristics of the Greyhound

Greyhounds are dogs that weigh roughly 50 to 85 pounds and have a short sleek cost. They have small narrow eyes and long tails.

The body of a greyhound is very muscular.

Adaptability

Surprisingly, greyhounds are easy to adapt to changes in the environment and change in owners.

Greyhounds are also easy to adapt to the age level of companions; either an elderly couple who may prefer to sit at home all day or a group of teens who may prefer to workout in the morning and evening.

Other Dog-Friendly

Greyhounds are very dog-friendly. It is wise to introduce other dogs early in their training. It is also wise to allow greyhounds their own space and feeding dishes.

As long as the other dogs respect the space, toys, and feeding dishes all will be well. They can play with other dogs easily.

Affection Level

Greyhounds can show affection to their owners and the members of the family that they live with if they are introduced to the members as puppies.

If an adult dog is adopted, the members must be introduced within one week of entering the home.

They can show affection by wagging their tails and by making eye contact with family members. Whatever positive feelings you display towards your greyhound, he will return that feeling to you.

Social Needs

A greyhound can enjoy his own company for an entire day. However, he can also be socialized towards other pets in the home such as cats, bunnies, birds, and other dogs.

Greyhounds can be socialized to accept a day housekeeper in his environment. So it can work either way for greyhounds.

Apartment Friendly

Being apartment-friendly depends on the owner of the dog. You cannot leave your greyhound for weeks without exercise. All that conserved energy needs an outlet.

If you are responsible and assist with the conserved energy, there will be no problem with living in an apartment. If you train to maintain your health, you will understand the needs of your greyhound.

Stranger Friendly

Greyhounds do not always accept strangers readily. They tend to ignore strangers or look at them with a readiness to defend their owners.

Training your greyhound to accept your visiting friends is possible. This will be useful when you have friends over for a cook-out or a family party.

Barking Tendencies

The greyhound is not a frequent barker. This breed of dog prefers a quiet day just being lazy. Your greyhound will bark if he is feeling scared. He will bark to alert you that something is wrong or if a stranger is in your house at a bad time when only your family should be at home.

Your greyhound may also bark if he is happy to see you return from work.

Territorial

Greyhounds are not as territorial as other dogs. If you give your dog their specific space in your home and let him know that your space is off-limits, your greyhound will be satisfied with that.

He will not be growling at every dog or cat that passes by.

Cat-Friendly

If your greyhound is well socialized to the pet cat in your home, you will not have any problems. This will not stop him from chasing after other cats when you are out exercising. This is the reason for a leash.

Intelligence

Greyhounds have average intelligence. They need commands repeated many times to remember them. Be very patient when teaching them new commands. You can also use props to help them remember your commands or rules of your house.

It is important to set boundaries early in their introduction to your home.

Child-Friendly

Greyhounds are child-friendly dogs. Greyhounds can tolerate few or many children playing with them in a home or in a backyard.

Be assured that it is safe to allow your children near your greyhound. A word of caution; do not let children play with your greyhound’s food at feeding time.

Playfulness

Greyhounds are not the most playful dogs. Your greyhound will not run to you with a ball at the end of the day.

However, if you take the time to engage your greyhound in play every day, he will join you and both of you will have fun.

Watchdog Ability

Greyhounds are not good watch-dogs. They tend to scare easily but will warn you of a threat by barking. They will notice if something is different in their environment but being a watchdog is not their sole purpose.

Do not expect your greyhound to stay awake, keeping a protective watch over your house all night.

Interaction With Other Pets

Greyhounds accept other pets if these pets are already in the home before you acquire a greyhound. Remember that greyhounds were bred for hunting small wildlife; so it is instinctive for the greyhound to chase and capture small animals.

Do not expect your other pets and your greyhound to sleep in the same bed.

Feeding Time!

Unlike some other breeds, Greyhound have a greater need for protein in their diet. As they have a higher rate of lean muscle mass than other breeds, they need extra protein to help them develop it.

The ideal is to feed your Greyhound with a high-quality dog food that has a lot of protein and fat, which will provide its body with all necessary nutrients it needs in order to be healthy .

How to Acquire This Breed

Most people think of getting a greyhound puppy as the easiest way to acquire a greyhound. However, there are other ways of owning a greyhound without all the bottles, being up at night with the crying and potty-training a puppy to go in the desired poo basket or outside of the house.

Therefore, it is wise to look around at animal shelters for retired greyhounds or greyhounds that need a home.

You can adopt one of these dogs instead of buying a puppy. If you are intent on buying a greyhound puppy, locate a responsible greyhound breeder who takes special care of all his dogs.

The Cost Of A Greyhound Dog

How much does a greyhound cost? My research tells me that the adoption of a retired greyhound will cost $325.00. Greyhound puppies will cost anywhere from $600.00 to $1,000.000.

However, do not be too quick to pay for the puppy before investigating the seller and the quality of lifestyle that the puppy has experienced since birth. In addition to your purchase, you may need to pay $45 to $50 for a health certificate.

Transportation may cost you $800 to $2,000 if you do not live in the country that the greyhound lives. Training classes also cost $135 to $225.

You need to add the price of a dog bed, a poo basket, and some toys. Be sure to be prepared for the expenses before choosing a dog or a puppy.

Breed Group

Greyhounds belong to the hound group. Some hounds hunt by smell while others like the greyhound hunt by sight. The main purpose of the hound was for hunting. Later, it was decided to use them for the entertainment of racing.

Before they could race they had to first train them to follow a target called a mechanical rabbit. This was done as the dogs only ran when they saw prey.

Is This Breed Suitable For A First Time Owner And Why?

This breed of dog called greyhound is not suitable for a first-time owner. The reason for saying so is that a first-time owner may be timid of reinforcing house rules.

He or she may buy just any dog food to feed a greyhound without realizing the damage that can be done on the dog’s stomach.

Another issue may be taking risks of leaving a greyhound alone for long periods which may cause the dog to become stressed. A person with none to limited knowledge of dogs may not feel it necessary to follow the vet’s instructions.

Therefore, a seasoned dog owner is the best person to adopt or buy a greyhound adult or greyhound puppies.
